I’m Nerva and I am making a decision to die right now. I’M SERIOUS. What I mean is dying to the old man in me that wants to rise up and destroy my life; the fleshly, deceitful desires to participate in anything God disapproves of in the Bible.
Surely, we all struggle with something we don’t want the world to know about (Romans 3:23). It may be pride, drug or nicotine abuse, alcohol abuse, jealousy, and so forth but eventually it will come out to haunt you (Luke 8:17). For me it’s my anger, which leads to evil (Psalm 37:8). I’ve been a bible believing Christian almost all of my life, but I am still under construction. Yes, I am saved, but I am not finished - God is still working on me (Phil 1:6). Honestly, if someone rubbed me the wrong way at this moment, they may not get Christ. However, consistent discipline in the Word of God has help me learn how to let go of offenses from others immediately (Psalm 109:4 | Matthew 11:6 | 2 Corinthians 12:10). Check out what my most recent criticizer had to get off of his chest:
So if you’re a struggling human being like me, I am here to let you know that the moment you come to Christ all of those issues will not go away immediately. In fact, it is impossible to train our flesh to obey us if we never learn to enslave its cravings (Matthew 16:24). I’m talking to those Christian believers who are Holy during the day, but have secrets in the night. I’m talking to those Christian believers who want to do what’s right, but the wrong turns always lead to depression and guilt. Now is our time to be free and know that there is hope for a better life (Romans 8:1). I am just like you – imperfect and broken, nevertheless, if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
“My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.” - 1 John 2:1-2
For those who truly believe, we have an advocate! However, that is not a license to sin (Romans 6). Urgently I tell you the truth, if this way of living continues, the Word of God teaches us that it will only lead to death, but there is hope (Romans 6:23). Each day I must acknowledge that I need God’s strength daily to live Godly. Also, there is no one or thing on earth that will ever produce transformation in my heart, mind, and life the way studying and living the Word of God will. We walk in the Spirit in order to conquer what we could never do in our own strength. Each day we all are presented with different opportunities to make a decision to repent and turn to God, where we will receive a refreshment like this world could never offer (Acts 3:19). Let the Spirit of the Lord conviction guide you to peace and truth in Jesus name.
Where do I go from here to walk in the spirit?
Regardless, even with Christians now carrying the indwelling Spirit of God (Acts 2:38), and are now saved apart from the works of the law, within themselves remain their old carnal traits, which tempts them to misuse their new freedom in Christ (Romans 8:22-25 | Galatians 5:13).
Galatians 5:22-25 teaches us, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.”
