When I was a child I couldn't understand why my parents never allowed me to watch too much television. From my point of view, I thought only cruel parents would take away the freedom of television from their children. Then I became a parent and it began to make sense. Today, parents have more control over what their four year-old watch on television in spite of commercials or ads depicting risky behaviors, such as smoking, drinking, violence, jealousy, sexual immorality and so much more. My point is, the point of view I had as the younger version of myself, I no longer have now that I am much older (1 Corinthians 13:11).
A good friend of mine helped to remind me how powerful our perspective is in life. For instance, if I ask you to look at the word "evil" what do you see? Some would say "evil" right? Well then there are some who would say that they see the word "live". Perspective can change everything. Merriam Webster dictionary defines perspective as a mental view or appearance to the eye of objects in respect to their relative distance, importances, relations and positions. All things are not about what you see it as, but how you see it as. Great things come from great starts and great starts begin in the mind. In spite of how things may appear in life we all have a choice: to fix our perspective on the positive or negative. Here are 5 reasons why you should fix your perspective on the positive:
1. LEARN AND GROW
No one is perfect but everyone has what it takes to be great. We don’t have to be the greatest to achieve greatness but once we make the decision in our mind to start, the next step is remaining committed to pushing pass our failures. Opposition show us what needs improving. Without opposition, how would we know what we need to work on to progress and grow? No one ever said that striving to accomplish goals wouldn't come with struggle, sacrifice, and suffering. Surely life would be much easier without it but these three things help us to gain new experiences, grow stronger, and build our knowledge and character along the way (Timothy 4:15). Whenever life knocks you down, don’t think of your journey as going through pain, hardship, or storms; think of your journey as pressing towards to progress and victory.
2. LIFE IS SHORT
Grab a hold to your deepest dreams before it takes off without out you. Life is too short to let others who may not understand you or your vision frighten you to not believe in yourself. Life is too short to allow procrastination to steal time you can’t buy back (Proverbs 10:4). Life is too short to not do what makes you happiest because of people who think your kind of happy is not the right way to be happy. The only person that stands in the way of you accomplishing your goals is you. Let nothing hinder you from your heart desires, not even yourself – especially if God put those desires there. No one should have to settle for a life that is beneath the one they are able to live. Start blocking out anything coming to your mind that oppose or does not thrust you forward to accomplishing your goals and becoming who God says you can be (Philippians 4:8). Many times you may be the only person there who will motivate you and even that is not enough. Just remember, when life knocks you down, don’t waste time staying down and feeling sorry for yourself. It is never too late to call on the Lord for strength (Philippians 4:13). Opposition will rise but with God all things are possible (Matthew 19:26). Life is too short too to wait until you are older just to wonder how things could have turned out if you would have tried and given full effort. Faith it until you make it (Hebrews 11).
3. THINGS CAN CHANGE
Do not despise small beginnings (Zechariah 4:10). Many over-comers started off small then scaled up. Oprah Winfrey started from the bottom then rose her way up to the top. Oprah endured a life of hardship to get to where she is now. Additionally, as stated by www.coca-cola.com, In 1892 only 25 bottles of Coca Cola were sold during the first year of business, but the company kept going. Furthermore, according to www.businessinsider.com, today the Coca-Cola Company has products available in over two hundred countries and is one of the most recognizable logos in the world. One or several failures does not mean defeat. If we were to focus more on what things looked like from our position of many circumstances we face, we may never get to see how great we can become because of the fear we carry saying 'I can’t do it'. Time will pass by anyway, why not give it all you’ve got, with the flaws and all, fears and falls?
4. OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS
“If the camel once gets his nose in a tent, his body will soon follow” –anonymous. Diligently prepare your mind for when your special chance arrives. It all takes the right timing and a sprinkle of patience (Ecclesiastes 3), but while waiting, why not use your time wisely to build yourself up for that one thing you always believed would come to pass? Be careful though. Sometimes taking patience too far beyond opportunity knocking can be a coward act of procrastination, or fear of success, more than fear of failure. We have dominion to make more opportunities than waiting for them (Genesis 1:26-27, Romans 4:17, Ephesians 3:20). Achievements are not made by sitting down. An idea will remain an idea until it is written down on paper, moreover, anything written down on paper will remain a dream until it is acted out into reality (James 2:14-24). There are no improvements or progress without change. Sometimes we have to push ourselves a little harder to keep pushing; to do something different towards achieving our biggest dreams so that we can see something different come to past.
5. QUITTERS DON'T FINISH A WINNER
Whatever you have a passion, desire, or patience for, you can do it if you believe you can; if you want it bad enough. We do not have the power to control everything, but we can control our thoughts and actions. The desire to give up is always there, so what will you do? There are many days and nights we have to do our best work even when we do not feel like it. It may seem easiest to quit but if succeeding was easy to do, the whole world would be doing it. “A minute of success pays the failure of years” – Robert Browning. In other words, discipline weighs ounces but regret weighs tons. It is always better to succeed later than never at all. As long as you are breathing, you should never give up on all possibilities to finishing the race as a winner (Philippians 3:13-14).
Acknowledge every difficult season as stepping stones to greater experiences. Sometimes we have to do things we do not find comfort, or even interest in in the beginning stages before we make it to where we desire to be. If you have not tried every possible route towards winning, there should be no excuses for why you would quit on something you say you have a passion for. Mistakes or difficulties are only opportunities to become better and grow. Never quit; you may be closer than you know. Strive to be the best at everything you do and don’t let anything keep you down. We all have different ways of seeing things so never let anyone discourage you from believing, thinking, or saying "I can do it". We inevitably become what we believe, so it is time to forget about what others say or think, because all won’t understand what God is doing in you, through you, or for you. Be confident in everything God created you to be because one cannot excel beyond the level of what they think they are worth. The world needs your special touch of creativity and someone out there needs to see you be bold, rise, and succeed! This is why you should!
