Don't let bitterness or wickedness take root in your life (Hebrews 12:15)!
Holding on to sinful ways, anger, resentment, and disappointment may be taking the life out of your fruitfulness; They are like poisonous substances which only produces bitter fruit. "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it (Proverbs 4:23)." It is easy to play the blame game when we feel angry and hurt but if we focus on doing our part God will take care of us. Don't be moved by the strong winds of life, stay grounded in God's solid foundation.
How deeply are you rooted in good ground?
For any plant to grow, become strong, and produce good fruit it needs to be firmly planted or established in good soil. A healthy plant also needs proper nourishment: water, air, and sunlight. Imagine your heart like a tree trying to live without water, except this is the living water from Gods word. And how can any tree survive without oxygen or light? When we remain rooted in Christ He is our breath of air and our light. How could we ever produce good fruit if we cut ourselves apart from Gods truth and goodness?
“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away (Psalms 1:1-4)."
If you cut the roots off from any tree it will fade away and the fruit will die. If the roots are not connected to good ground, again, the tree will fade away and the fruit will die. If you have any bad fruit in your life it's because you have a bad tree producing it. Remember we're still imagining that your "heart" is like a tree. Your "words" are the fruits. Proverbs 18:21 reads, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”
Are you producing bad fruit or good fruit in your life?
If a persons heart does not overflow with the living water Jesus gives, then whatever a person heart is filled with will eventually come out of their mouth. In this case a wicked heart will speak wickedness and desire what it delights in. A good heart will speak life and desire what it delights in (Luke 6:45). Romans 8:5 puts this idea into better words than I, "Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires." Only the living water Jesus offers produces life and only His Spirit vivifies. When we breathe, live, and love the fruit of that living water Jesus offers us, we also eat it, which inevitably produces growth, strength, and good fruit in our lives.
If the problem is in the heart, then how do I fix my heart?
Jesus said, "Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up (Matthew 15:13)." But God is in the business of transforming hearts to produce good fruit through faith and staying rooted in Jesus Christ. One of the most effective ways we can go about fixing our hearts and staying rooted in Christ is to avoid letting bitterness take root (Hebrews 12:15) and to immerse ourselves in His word every day. Let's be rooted so deeply in Christ that nothing can uproot us from the Lord and His ways which leads us to all truth and a much more fruitful life (Proverbs 12:3).
"Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness." -
